Drag antibody (red) to touch mast cell (purple). Drag food antigen (yellow) to touch antibody (red). Click "Movie" button to see more action.
Make sure all are in good contact, then mast cell releases histamine (white). The histamine can make it really hard to breath. When the food antigen first entered the body before the allergy developed, the antigen triggered the antibodies to connect to mast cell, preparing it to release histamine next times the food antigen comes into contact with it. It is partly a normal immune response, but incorrectly responds to a food that isn't dangerous.
