Due to coronal mass ejections from the Sun, auroras can be seen in the southern U.S.! This is a drawing of what I saw last night (5/10/24) around 10:00 in southern Tennessee, but it could be visible, even with greater intensity, for the next few nights. It's not something you want to miss!
Make sure you wait until the sky is dark and go away from light pollution. A field in a rural area or something similar would be ideal. The farther north you are, the more likely you will be to see it and the brighter they will be! What causes it: Charged particles are spewed out of the Sun. They are extremely dangerous, but, when they collide with Earth's magnetic field, they get trapped and spin around, releasing colorful light as they bounce back and forth between Earth's poles.
