The cat and dog homes are full of animals that have had terrible lives, and they're the ones rescued in time,many others don't make it that far. I have three rescued cats, before that I had a dog. I just find it impossible to spend too long in the rescue shelters because it breaks my heart to see so many unwanted, unloved, uncared for animals.
