Bowser accidentally released a powerful demon that would corrupt and destroy the Mushroom World from the inside out. And so Mario and co. decided to have one last race, for old times' sake, before their collective untimely doom. Unfortunately for them, the corruption had already hit hard by the time they got to the racetrack.
